Why donate cryptocurrency to United Way of the Yampa Valley?

We envision a county where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through access to education, opportunities to improve financial stability, and support to lead healthy lives. We know we are not at this vision yet. With 30% of Routt County households living below the county self-sufficiency standard, many individuals and families struggle to make ends meet. Children are not reading at proficiency third grade reading levels and youth don’t always have a safe, nurturing place to go after school and during the summer.

The IRS classifies cryptocurrencies as property, so cryptocurrency donations to 501(c)(3) charities receive the same tax treatment as stocks. Donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, meaning you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it on your taxes. Please contact your tax or financial advisor for more information.

Tax Benefits

  • Donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event. Donors do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated crypto that is donated and can typically deduct the fair market value of the donation on their taxes.
  • This often makes Bitcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrency donations one of the most tax efficient ways to support your favorite cause. Talk to a crypto-savvy tax professional or connect with The Giving Block to get connected with one. If you want to learn more about how donating crypto can lower your taxes, check out

Refund Policy

All cryptocurrency donations made to United Way of the Yampa Valley via The Giving Block are nonrefundable.

Our nonprofit works hard to ensure that every token that is donated is put to work as soon as possible. When we receive your donation it is understood that this is made to support our mission and we are grateful for your support. As these donations are often immediately converted into fiat, we do not offer refunds on any donations that are made in cryptocurrency.

We are not able to give refunds if you changed your mind, sent the wrong cryptocurrency or made the wrong decision. United Way of the Yampa Valley and the Giving Block does not, has not, and will never offer any form of cryptocurrency airdrop, goods or services in return for a donation.
